Understanding image formats

JPG vs PNG: What’s the Difference?

JPG and PNG are both common image formats, but they’re designed for different purposes. JPG is widely used for photos because it can keep file sizes relatively small. PNG is useful for graphics and images that need lossless storage or transparent backgrounds.

JPG

JPG — Great for Photos

JPG uses lossy compression, which removes some image information to reduce file size. It’s a practical choice for photographs, product images and everyday web pictures.

JPG files don’t support transparency. Quality may decrease when an image is repeatedly saved using lossy compression.

PNG

PNG — Useful for Graphics

PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency. It’s often suitable for screenshots, interface elements, diagrams and graphic-design assets.

PNG photos may use considerably more storage than JPG versions of the same image.

Quick comparison

JPG and PNG Features Compared

Feature JPG PNG
Compression Lossy Lossless
Transparency Not supported Supported
Photographs Usually a good choice Often larger files
Graphics and screenshots May introduce artifacts Preserves decoded pixel detail
Typical file size Often smaller for photos Depends on image content
Image quality explained

Does JPG to PNG Conversion Improve Image Quality?

Changing a JPG file to PNG doesn’t improve the original image’s resolution or restore details already lost through compression. If the JPG contains visible artifacts, those imperfections will remain in the PNG version.

What PNG does offer is lossless storage of the decoded image. That can be useful if you need to continue editing or saving the image without introducing another round of lossy JPG compression.

Helpful tip: Converting to PNG may increase the file size. If your main goal is a smaller image for a website, try our Image Compressor instead.

Transparency and backgrounds

Will Converting JPG to PNG Remove the Background?

No. PNG supports transparent pixels, but converting a JPG into PNG doesn’t automatically remove an existing background.

For example, if a JPG contains a product photographed against a white background, that white background will still appear in the converted PNG.

Creating transparency requires a separate background-removal or image-editing process. Changing the format alone won’t do it.

Where PNG comes in handy

When Should You Convert JPG to PNG?

Website and App Graphics

Some design workflows need PNG assets. Conversion helps when the original image is available only as JPG.

Presentations

Prepare images in PNG format for presentation templates, design files, or specific application requirements.

Further Image Editing

Use PNG for workflows that benefit from lossless saving after the original JPG has been decoded.

File Format Compatibility

Convert a file when an online platform or software application specifically requires a PNG image.

Frequently asked questions

JPG to PNG Converter FAQs

Is this JPG to PNG Converter free?

Yes. You can use the current CAPS JPG to PNG Converter for free without creating an account.

Can I convert JPEG files too?

No. Converting the file format doesn’t create new image detail or increase the original resolution.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

Not automatically. The background remains unless it is removed separately.

Why is my PNG larger than the JPG?
